Antalya’s Secret Paradise: Blue Cave

The Blue Cave discovered in 1972 by geologist Dr. Temuçin Aygen, is located in the Kaş, a province of Antalya. The cave is located near Kaputaş beach on the seashore between Kaş and Kalkan and has few examples in the world. It is 18 km to Kaş and 6 km to Kalkan. Kalkan, where the blue cave is located, has been awarded the blue flag award thanks to its clean sea water and beauty. Kalkan, formerly known as Kalamaki, is built on a steep slope. It is famous for its white-painted houses and its economy is based on tourism, agriculture, and husbandry. The region has been dominated by many civilizations and traces of the Romans, Hellenistic Kingdoms and Anatolian Seljuks can be seen over the years. Thousands of tourists visit this place every year, it is one of the most important travel destinations that makes Kaş a very famous province and preserves its natural identity. This cave located in the south of Kaş is seen as a gift from God for the islanders.

It takes its name from the blue light formed by the reflection of the sunlight coming in from the sea on the outer part of the cave and reflecting into the water at an acute angle. It is divided into inner and outer parts with different chambers and channels. The sizes of the cave are 50 meters long, 40 meters wide, and 15 meters high. The cave formed for more than one reason manages to fascinate people once again with itself and the magnificence of nature. It becomes a destination that those who come and see it will not want to leave.

Let us announce to those who will visit and want to visit there; it is quite easy to reach the cave and there are various alternatives. You can reach the blue cave with small motorized boats departing from Meis harbor within a 15-minute drive. You can join the boat tours with a maximum of 6 people and it takes 45 minutes in total. On the other hand, you can join various tours during the day from the center of Kaş and reach there. You can also discover other natural beauties outside the cave. You can even swim if you are in a suitable location. But pay attention to the time of your arrival because the blue cave only receives sunlight from morning until noon, so we don’t recommend visiting it in the evening times. Also, the interior of the cave is dark because it does not receive light. Since the cave is not very big, it is quite easy to visit the cave except for the dark parts with the boats you are on. There is also no entrance fee to the cave.

Since it is a small cave, when you pass through the entrance of the cave, which is not more than one-meter-long, sit on the ground on the boat when the captain tells you to. Close your eyes and pass through the small cave door and find yourself in a fascinating deep blue, high, wide, and spacious cave that resembles the caves in fairy tales. Even though it is an exciting entrance, the serenity of the water reflects on you and you feel peaceful. According to the captains, this cave was home to seals in the past. If you visit in April or May, you are very likely to encounter seals. Another alternative that is as exciting as swimming here is diving. The Blue Cave is also a great opportunity for those who want to dive. Professional and amateur diving teams carry out various studies in the outer part of the cave and help guests who want to dive. Since the bottom of the water is clearer and more beautiful than the top, it is a very ideal place for scuba diving. During diving, you are likely to encounter coral and shrimp shoals from different water creatures. In addition, while you are here, you should enjoy the Mediterranean Sea and visit Kabak Bay, which is one of the places worth seeing.
